I've found it that my meditative sessions are more deep and effective when I focus completely on phosphenes (tiny dancing pinpoints of light when you close your eyes) You focus on them straight ahead as a totality, not one by one, it would be impossible.
This in correlation with good deep breathes and awareness of body sensations are truly effective and has helped me a lot to not get attached to thoughts or emotions that arise during the session.
